Aankomst (na zes zeedagen) in Vancouver. Goed gevoel, weer land onder de voeten!! Het is werkelijk prachtig, de intocht tussen het vasteland en Vancouver Island met schitterende uitzichten, een kust met rotsen in zee, prachtig beboste eilanden en vergezichten over de blauwe zee, die rimpelloos is. Het schip meert aan een prachtig gelegen pier, op loopafstand van het centrum van de stad. Alles ziet er patent uit vanwege de net beëindigde Olympische Winterspelen 2010. Het schijnt een van de best leefbare steden ter wereld te zijn en het is dan ook een hoogtepunt in de reis! Er hoog percentage van de bevolking zijn aziaten. Vancouver's Chinatown is op een na de grootste van Noord Amerika. Het is er onvoorstelbaar netjes en schoon.

Tijdens onze excursie rijden wij door het oude "Gaslight" district, heel pittoresk. Er wordt ons ook nog gewezen op een bestaand heel groot drugsprobleem, die lui houden zich in een straat hier in de buurt op. Hierna rijden we door Stanleypark een natuurlijk park met eeuwenoude bomen en overal prachtige natuur en aan de overkant uitzicht op de prachtige gebouwen. Uitzichtpunt bij de grote brug waar wij ook met de "Amsterdam" onderdoor gevaren zijn. Ook aan het water een prachtige residentiële area met peperdure flatgebouwen.De buschauffeur is tevens de gids, een gepensioneerde heer met veel reiservaring!! In het park is een hele mooie, originele collectie totempalen te zien van de oorspronkelijke indiaanse stammen.Het park wordt beschermd door een 5,5 mijl lange zeewal, tegen de heftige winterstormen. In 2006 heeft een storm, van bijna orkaankracht, heel veel oude bomen geveld, waar nu de stompen nog van te zien zijn. Na afloop van de bustour ga ik nog terug naar het Gaslightdistrict (zondag). De winkels zijn nu open en er is veel meer leven op straat. Het uitvaren is weer net zo geweldig als de intocht. Werkelijk een prachtige stad en een hoogtepunt van onze reis!!

Newsflash

As most of the text is written in dutch by my mother and then typed in the PC by my father (censorship !), I thought it would be useful to have some translations of the texts for everyones enjoyment.

You will notice in the upper left side of the screen a set of small flags, just click on the flag you wish to read and enjoy the text.

As with all automatic page translators, the result may not always reflect the reality of the texts, I was quite shocked when I read in the english version that Paul had suddenly turned grey after the trip to the US. When in fact the text spoke of his suitcase.

So be warned, it could lead to some interesting discussions
